The City That Never Sleeps

Finally found some time off (and energy, because I just ended training earlier this evening) to use the computer. Shall focus mostly on my CCA progress in this post, since coach mentioned something about keeping a climbing journal or something like that.

Climbing officially kicked off in near end of February to early March that period of time. Frankly speaking, I didn't foresee myself coming this far in this CCA, even to the extent of wanting to lead my CCA mates for the following year as their captain.

Initially I went for the CCA open house with completely no intention of joining any other CCAs besides Photographic Society. Back then I was really into photography, and was looking forward to joining the CCA as a way to improve my skills. But what happened on that day was really unexpected. In the end, I went for Track&Field trials because Jiayi told me to just try for the CCA, went for Squash trials just to see what the coach thinks of me, Tennis because I had half a mind to join, Photographic Society because that was my initial choice of CCA, and last but not least Climbing, because I somehow told Ronald that I would be going for the trial. Well, due to wet weather, the trial was relocated to the boulder wall, and I was really amazed by how fun bouldering was that I am very sure I was very convinced to join the CCA. And so I did.

I still remember going to ClimbAsia to buy our first pair of climbing shoes and other accessories. I was so hyped up over my new pair of shoes that I immediately went to boulder the next day. So, I ended up training every single day, during my breaks and after school because I was really disappointed with my performance for the 2nd trial. This carried on for about close to a month I think. And I went from being a rather weak guy to a fairly stronger and better climber right now. Many thanks to my hardcore training, I would say. Feeling so proud of myself now, looking back at what has happened the past month or so.

Training sessions @ Onsight Climbing Gym on Wednesdays are partly the reason of why I love Wednesdays. Had my first successful climb on the high wall @ Onsight and I admit, the first ascend is definitely a scary one (have a slight fear of heights). But gradually as I climb, the fear just goes away. Like what Leon said once, 'When I start climbing, my mind only think that when I fall, the belayer better catch me, nothing else.' Found this very true because whenever I'm on the high wall, I only think about my next move (execution, technique) and nothing else. Everything else just goes away, really.
Bouldering is probably my stronger aspect right now, since I am better at it than most of the guys are as compared to high walls. Had my first go at the advanced wall and it was really an eye opener for me. And it feels especially good to be able to complete a route that no one else is able to. That feeling, really doesn't come easy. But it sure feels good!

Managed my first successful ascend @ the high wall in school just last week. Can still remember my 2 failed attempts earlier on when we just started out top rope climbing (way before our first session @ Onsight). That feeling when I managed to get up there successfully is just, beyond what words can express.

Today's session was our first time doing dummy lead climbing. So I ended up being the first & last climber (how that happened, I have no idea). Basically I had to put in the quickdraws, clip in with my dummy rope (1st climb) and I had to clip in & withdraw the quickdraws (on my descend). Wasn't a really easy task when I came down, because I spent close to 5 mins on the overhang, trying to figure out a way to get to thw top. Nevertheless, it was a good experience, and a good session too, since coach gave some good feedback about the session, and because I climbed twice on the route that I had trouble ascending in my previous training (lane 3, to be exact). I am still having problems right now, as in I can't reach the top as easily as Jeff. But today's climb was definitely a good one, no doubt.

Oh and speaking of which, had my NAPFA last week and my 2.4km run this week. Last week's 5 stations turned out to be a mood killer, thanks to my S&R (35cm). I can't stretch for nuts.Other stations saw great improvement. SBJ - 266cm, Shuttle run - 9.2s, Chin up - 13, Sit-up - 41. But the best came today when I ran my 2.4km. Achieved my personal best - 9 mins 44s! It really goes to show how running with others really pushes one to their limits. Feeling so happy now for my 2.4km, oh yeah!

Guess that's about it though. Nothing much on the academic side. Shall update again when I find the time to!
